True to the adage, one can take the man out of the country,
but not the country out of the man…

Due to the recent political scenario racism is overpowering development UK. This is the state of affairs in the United Kingdom where British- Asians are struggling for the preservation of their own cultures in reaction to the British culture. To portray this catastrophic issue SERENDIP PRODUCTIONS has designed a thirteen-part series program. It aims at exposing the lifestyles of thirteen different Asians families living in UK. With realism it encompasses social cultural and religious issues, which are in conflict with the British customs. The British air has influenced the minds of Asian immigrants and a generation gap has taken place within each community.

PROGRAMME TITLE: BUILDING BRIDGES

First of new series. Bradford’s multicultural society built up since the second World War was torn apart by the riots of 2001. The city is now desperate to build bridges. Tonight a Christian Pakistani travels to Bradford to try to bringing communities together.

PROGRAMME TITLE: FOR BETTER OR WORSE

A look at marriage traditions among British Pakistanis, where arranged marriages are often blamed for domestic violence. Tonight Saeeda, a lawyer activist and aspiring politician happily married to a cousin from Pakistan, talks about her beliefs and work in Pakistan to help destitute women as three Yorkshire girls share their views that marriage is a failing institution worldwide and whilst religion is used as a justification, it is the cultural norms that create problems.

Nadeem Shah and Jimmy Dean are both successful Pakistanis married to local Yorkshire girls. Both have strong Muslim beliefs and respect for British way of life. They want to give their children the best of both worlds.
Young Tariq Shah is at university and is certain his mixed upbringing will be a great asset to his future as an aspiring politician.

Javed has come a long way from ejecting miscreants from the seamy nightclub as a bouncer 15 years ago. Today he owns one of the most successful leisure complexes in Europe. A true British royalist by nature, he is deeply influenced by his Muslim upbringing, His strong beliefs take him across the globe, holding free camps for plastic surgery for the victims of domestic violence in Bangladesh and Pakistan.

PROGRAMME TITLE: COLOURS OF THE EAST

Fascinated customers get their hands painted with customary henna, a Sikh Bhangra band entertains, young Indian dancers step shyly forward to perform an ancient dance piece. . This is the best of British Asian culture at the annual mela where people from all the walks of life come together. A far cry from reality on the ground where communities in the aftermath of the riots are drifting apart and the youth are blamed for the wrongs in society.

In a few year’s time half of the children starting school in Bradford will be Asians. Despite the dearth of British Asians role models, the city has a lot to be proud of. A young restaurateur, a mid wife, and a boxer all aspire to be the best in their fields.
